Completely Free Domain Name Registration

Yes, it is possible to get totally free domain names. This post will look at the ways to get free domain names, with some of the pros and cons of each.
Ways to get free domain names:
1. Register a domain name at freedomain.co.nr. This site allows you to get domain names for free. They all have the .co.nr extension at the end of the domain name. The domain name must still be hosted somewhere (unless you redirect the link to another site), but the site also points you to some free hosting solutions. These domains are great for people who want to cloak affiliate links. You can use these domains to link to affiliate products without the link looking like an affiliate link. They are also useful if you want to create simple sites that you tell your friends about or use in traffic exchanges. Unfortunately, free domains never rank well in the major search engines, Google (see ‘Who Founded Google‘) and Yahoo, so you will not get people coming to your site from searches.
2. Find ‘buy one, get one free’ offers. Many of the major sellers of domain names (GoDaddy comes to mind) have special offers from time to time where you can buy one domain and get another free. The GoDaddy promo code ZINE3 (which I use a lot when I buy domain names) allows you to purchase .com domains for $6.95 each. While not ‘free’ per se, this discount can help save you a fair amount of money if you purchase lots of domains. GoDaddy also allow you to get your own domain name (eg. bobsmith.com) for free with any purchase.
3. Most sites that offer hosting packages give you a free domain name when you first sign up. We got this domain name for free when we signed up with BlueHost. It is also free for the life of the domain name (ie. forever- or at least until the end of the internet). Of course, a month or two of hosting costs as much as a domain name anyway, but most hosting plans now allow you to host an unlimited amount of websites (which you’ll have to pay for or get for a free .co.nr one).
4. Sign up to a free blogging site like Blogger. While it is not really your own domain, as it ends in .blogspot.com, it is still free. Google also ranks blogs highly in their search results.
